overview
Ménière's disease is unpredictable by nature. A person can feel fine in the morning and, hours later, be caught by vertigo strong enough to make standing impossible. Living with that uncertainty shapes everything: routines, work, confidence, even the willingness to leave home.
Menicare was designed as a care companion that stays useful in both worlds. On calm days it helps build healthy habits and a reliable health history. On bad days it takes the lead and guides the person through the crisis with as little effort as possible.
problem
Existing tools treated the condition as a data problem. They asked people to fill forms, navigate menus and interpret charts, which works fine until the moment it matters most. During a crisis, vertigo, nausea and disorientation shrink someone's capacity to read, decide or tap precisely.
Between crises the picture was not much better. Symptoms, triggers, medication and sleep lived scattered across notes and memory, so appointments started from incomplete stories and doctors decided with partial information.
research
The project started with quantitative data about the condition and interviews with real patients. Those conversations shaped personas, information architecture and user flows, but they also surfaced the insight that reframed the whole product: in the middle of an episode, a person cannot think their way through an interface.
Every critical flow was rebuilt around that constraint. Short language, large targets, one question at a time, and as few choices as the situation allows.
solution
The answer became an app with three pillars, connecting what happens during a crisis to what doctors need to see after it.
SOS mode: a guided conversation that tells the person what to do, checks if they are safe and alerts trusted contacts, while logging the episode automatically.
Clinical value from personal data: structured records of symptoms, triggers, food, sleep and exercises, exported as reports that make appointments more precise.
Daily prevention: progressive balance programs, video guided exercises and therapeutic sounds that lower stress and tinnitus.
key decision
The most important call in the project was letting the system drive the SOS flow. The user only answers yes or no, ideally by voice. No menus, no reading, no open decisions. That choice removed friction and visual dependency exactly where they cost the most.
It also changed the product's identity. Menicare stopped being a tracker and became active support, present in the worst minutes and not just in the reports that follow them.
outcome
The SOS experience became the product's positioning. The app now works on both ends of the condition, preventing crises through daily care and responding when one arrives, while turning personal records into information a doctor can actually use.
learnings
Health products punish vanity. Empathy, clarity and simplicity are design decisions with the same weight as any visual choice, and designing for someone's worst moment is the fastest way to learn that lesson.
